You may think you are in a futuristic yet familiar place once you are inside the Ford Airstream Concept Crossover. This is because its interior is inspired by Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey movie.
In this space age vehicle’s back seat area is a 360-degree entertainment screen that is part lava lamp, part virtual fire and part live camera feed. The screen can also be used for playing games or other entertainment. In the front seat area are captain’s chairs for driver and passenger, which help with socializing that may be essential for long, cross-country road trips. From the shotgun side, the passenger can also watch DVDs or post mobile blogs. At the driver’s disposal is a floating instrument panel with touch-screen controls, containing essential driving information.
But futuristic vehicle design is not the main aim of this fuel cell crossover; it is heading for a greener future.
Featuring Ford’s HySeries Drive system, it uses a 336-volt lithium-ion battery pack for pop and powers the vehicle solely for the first 25 miles. After that, it kicks in its hydrogen fuel cell, which supplies power to the lithium-ion batteries that in turn spew out watts to drive the electric motor.
By this, the Airstream Concept will produce zero emissions and have excellent fuel efficiency. The combined 208 mile range from the hydrogen side and the hybrid electric side can produce a total range calculated at about 305 miles.
On the day when the Ford Airstream Crossover will become more than just a concept, we can expect a cleaner and greener environment.
