Fisker Automotive, Inc., a green American premium sports car company, today announced that its first production car, the Fisker Karma, will be showcased at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS). With only minor design enhancements made to the exterior of the vehicle, the production Fisker Karma plug-in hybrid retains the extreme proportions and beautiful sculpture of the January 2008 Karma show car.

“We are very excited to be bringing the Fisker Karma back to NAIAS,” said Fisker Automotive CEO Henrik Fisker. “In the year since we debuted the Karma, the reception we’ve received has been tremendous. I’m proud to announce at this time that we are already sold out on the car until mid-2010.”

With a base price of $87,900 (USD), the Fisker Karma is scheduled to begin delivery in November, 2009. Featuring the proprietary Q-Drive powertrain, the Fisker Karma will have an all-electric range of 50 miles (80km). After the all electric 50 miles, the gasoline engine turns a generator to charge the lithium ion battery. Once the 50-mile electric range has been exceeded, the Fisker Karma can be used as a normal hybrid vehicle. With this balance of electric and gas range, Fisker Automotive estimates that most Karma drivers who charge the Karma overnight and commute less than 50 miles per day will be able to achieve an average fuel economy of 100 mpg (2.4L/100km) per year.

The production model to be featured at the 2009 NAIAS will include an upper grill that is graphically enhanced, being slightly larger towards the outer corners. The lower air intake has been enlarged to allow for more airflow and underneath the rear bumper, an aerodynamic diffuser includes the integration of a cooling cover for the electric drivetrain.

To optimize cooling and aerodynamics, the exhaust pipe from the ICE engine is routed directly out behind the front wheels. A small functional side vent will release the hot air when the ICE engine is turned on. The Fisker Karma also features a complete flush B-pillar. The B-pillar is a safety feature and already fulfills the proposed 2012 rollover protection safety regulations.

The power dense dual motor traction drive is capable of delivering a peak output mechanical power of 300 kW (408 hp) and a peak torque of 1300 Nm (959 Ft-lb) to the input of the differential. In Sport mode this provides for a high performance luxury sport sedan acceleration time of 0 to 60 mph (0-100 km/h) in less than 6 seconds. The sustained (electronic limited) top speed is 125 mph (200 km/h).

Karma Powertrain Operating Modes

Stealth

Stealth is the default mode of operation. In this mode of operation the Q-Drive continuously optimizes the system performance and efficiency around fuel economy and electric operation. The high efficiency traction system and stable battery pack operating characteristics provide for full no-compromise electric performance on the urban driving schedule. The total achievable all electric range of greater than 50 miles is realized while in Stealth mode. In this mode the maximum vehicle speed will be limited to 95 mph with slightly limited acceleration. When electric mode is exited, the charge sustaining low energy threshold has been reached. The Q-Drive system then transitions to HEV operation. In HEV mode, the Q-Drive still optimizes fuel economy.

Sport

Sport is a driver selectable feature allowing for enhanced vehicle performance operation. This mode takes full advantage of the peak traction system performance capability and delivers the peak on-demand power and torque in order to achieve a 0 to 60 mph time of 5.8 seconds and a top speed of 125 mph. At anytime the driver can switch between stealth and sport modes. Should the driver wish to change back to Stealth mode, the Q-Drive will transition the vehicle operation to the Stealth mode low energy operating threshold.

HEV

When in HEV or charge sustaining mode the Q-Drive control system operates the vehicle very much the same as a normal strong hybrid. This includes deceleration engine shutdown, zero speed engine-off, electric launch and auto-start capability, and charge sustaining while maintaining charge balancing throughout the customer drive cycle. When the driver is in Sport mode, the Q-Drive automatically transitions to the charge sustaining mode at a higher SOC level than when in Stealth mode. This ensures that sufficient energy is available to support driver demands. Should the driver transition from Stealth to Sport while in HEV mode; the Q-Drive will restore the higher low-energy threshold. This provides for a high performance, on-demand, no-compromise, vehicle operation.

Fuel Economy & Energy Recovery

The Q-Drive system in all modes of operation works synchronously with the regenerative braking system and optimizes the energy recovery around driving conditions, driver demands for downhill simulated engine braking, vehicle speed, and road conditions.

Exterior Design

Eco Chic

Low, wide and coupe-like in profile, sensually sculpted surfaces mix with dramatic and powerful proportions to give the Fisker Karma a “look” all its own. The Karma’s dynamic stance is just as much a thing of beauty as it is a result of the car’s proprietary technical layout. Standard 22-inch light alloy rims at all four corners make Karma a world-leader in the wheel to body relationship. Form and function go hand in hand at Fisker.

Furthermore, innovative and functional design features such as side-mounted charging indicators, state-of-the-art LED-Xenon lighting, unique external-mounted speaker covers and a one-piece solar glass roof work in harmony to express the new design aesthetic that is Eco-Chic.

The exterior design of the production Karma is instantly recognizable and makes no compromises, with only minor changes from the 2008 Karma show car.

The Karma headlamp combines a Bi-Xenon main lighting module with state-of-the-art LEDs making it one of the most energy-efficient headlamps ever offered. The distinctive bezel design is yet another example of the new Eco-Chic aesthetic.

Designed to match the unique driving experience of the Fisker Karma’s electric driveline, the suspension system balances attributes of a grand touring sedan with the fun-to-drive characteristics of a legitimate sports car. Using a systems integration approach to the complex tradeoffs of an all new plug-in hybrid platform, engineers were able to meet rigorous functional targets that are competitive with other luxury sports sedans. The design result takes advantage of Karma’s low center of gravity, wide track, and long wheelbase to deliver a unique driving experience with a blend of response and comfort.

Based on the S350, The S400 BlueHYBRID has a 3.5-liter V-6 gasoline engine mated to a 7G-TRONIC seven-speed automatic transmission with reprogrammed management software for the hybrid application. It also has a new auxiliary oil pump for transmission lubrication even when the engine is switched off.
The 2009 S400 BlueHYBRID will be Mercedes-Benz’ first hybrid passenger car and also the first mass-production hybrid with a lithium-ion battery that’s been specially developed for automotive use. The S Class hybrid will go sale in Europe in June 2009 and be available in the U.S. three months later.
The S400 BlueHYBRID’s motor acts as a generator when braking to keep the Li-ion battery charged. Besides saving fuel, regenerative braking saves brake wear and tear since brakes are only activated when the driver applies heavy pressure to the pedal. Otherwise, braking is provided by engine compression and regenerative braking alone.
Mercedes-Benz says the S400 BlueHYBRID is the world’s most economical luxury sedan that uses a gasoline engine. Compared to the S350, fuel economy is improved by up to 2.2 liters per 100 kilometers for an overall rating of 7.9 liter/100 km (30 mpg). Overall CO2 emissions are reduced by 21 percent to just 190 grams per kilometer, for the world’s lowest CO2 emissions in this vehicle and performance class.

Who says only four-wheelers can take the lead in the green vehicle technology?

Established in 1996, eCycle produces a line of advanced brushless motors and generators, which have a wide range of applications in commercial, industrial, and consumer markets worldwide, particularly for mobile applications. Now, it is introducing its new hybrid motorcycles.

Using an 8kW permanent magnetic brushless CMG motor / generator (which can output 400 amps) and a 4-stroke gasoline engine, the eCycle Hybrid Motorcycle delivers 0-60 in just 6 seconds with a top speed of 80 mph. it also delivers up to 180 mpg fuel efficiency.

Redesigned from the 2001 model (which then featured a 219 cc diesel-electric hybrid power system), the new eCycle weighs only 230 lbs and features lower, more relaxed seating position, making the platform ideal for entry-level riders and commuters and the rear suspension sports a Penske Racing Coil-Over Mono-Shock.

The eCycle Hybrid Motorcycle transmission is a 2-speed, constant mesh, 3-shaft design utilizing ball and needle bearing construction with custom rolled gears. Low gear features an over-running clutch for smooth shifting and safety.

The eCycle Hybrid is more than a motorcycle; it is practical and has low impact on the environment. So, take a spin for a cleaner and greener future.

The 2008 Toyota Prius was given a very good reception during its release — rating one of the top green cars. The only challenge for the 2009 model is whether it can surpass its predecessor.

But that would barely be a question since Toyota is on a mission for the 2009 Prius to: drive the economy ratings skyward, and cut the associated costs by 20-30 percent.

Shocked by the news that Honda is lowering the price for the Fit Hybrid for 2008 with the price differential just 200,000 yen (some $1,700) more than the regular gasoline version, Toyota is planning to slash R&D costs and halve its current hybrid differential of 500,000 yen (some $4,240) to compete.

Sources say the next Prius will also be able to run longer and faster in pure electric mode, up to a sustained 30 mph, which will significantly extend its zero-emissions range.

The current model is hitting North America at present. So, what more if the 2009 version will be released with better economy and value?

Although not rated as a supercar like the Lamborghini or Maserati, the Toyota FT-HS Hybrid Sports Concept Car will be priced ranging from $30,000 and above.

Designed by Calty Design Research in Newport Beach, California, (who took an entire year of drafts to come up with the aggressive eco design), the FT-HS comes with a lot of unique and advanced features.

One of the unique features of the Toyota FT-HS includes a carbon-fibre Kevlar retractable roof that pulls into the backseat area and turns this 2+2 four seater into a 2-seat convertible with the touch of a button. Pretty radical, right? There is more: the steering wheel has an outer ring that moves around an inner ring for smoother handling and side-to-side movement of the vehicle.

Combining the power from an internal combustion engine and an electric motor can also serve to compound the horsepower and speed of the vehicle. This makes the FT-HS perform faster – an essential in the sports car industry.

Typically, sports cars are not the environmentalist’s dream. But thanks to hybrid technology, Toyota is planning to change that through the FT-HS which is yet to be produced. We just hope it will be soon enough.

During the 2003 Tokyo Motor Show, Mazda created a milestone by creating the first and only rotary hybrid car in the world.

The Mazda RX-8 Renesis has an electronically-controlled direct-injection rotary engine with a high-pressure hydrogen fuel tank. It also runs on gasoline as well – this is what we mean by a rotary hybrid car.

According to Mazda, “The RENESIS Hydrogen Rotary Engine incorporates an electronically-controlled hydrogen injector system (the hydrogen is injected in a gaseous state). The system draws air from the side port during the induction cycle and uses dual hydrogen injectors in each of the engine’s twin rotor housings to directly inject hydrogen into the intake chambers. By virtue of its construction, with separate chambers for induction and combustion, the rotary engine is ideally suited to burn hydrogen without inviting the backfiring that can occur when hydrogen is burned in a traditional piston engine. The separate induction chamber also provides a safer temperature for fitting the dual hydrogen injectors with their rubber seals, which are susceptible to the high temperatures encountered in a conventional reciprocating engine.”

Like what you expect from a hybrid, the Renesis provides less impact on the environment: has low emissions, is fuel efficient, and has an outstanding fuel economy. It includes regenerative braking, idle-stop systems and electric acceleration assistance systems. It also employs a couple of other eco-friendly features like using a water-based paint, applied wet three times, which reduces the emission of organic solvents, speeds drying time and reduces CO2 gases. The RX-8 also uses plant-based plastic parts on the interior that are not derived from petroleum unlike other plastics.

The new rotary engine used by the RX-8 Renesis is a positive addition to Mazda’s hybrid vehicles. We can bet other automakers will be developing their own one in time.

Who says hydrogen fuel cell cars are slow?

Ford Fusion Hydrogen 999 recently broke the land speed record at the Bonneville Salt Flats at a speed of 207 miles per hour (333 km/h). According to Ford, the Fusion is the world’s first and only fuel cell technology production based race car.

The result of a partnership between Ford, the Ohio State University Center for Automotive Research, Ballard Power Systems and Roush Racing, the Fusion was developed after 10 years of R&D into hydrogen vehicle technology and over a year of specific design and development of the 999 model.

Although more aerodynamic than a standard race car, the Fusion Hydrogen 999 has an exterior similar to the latter but it is closer to the ground, has no side mirrors and since there is no radiator, it lacks a grille to let air in. Weighing 6,700 pounds (over 3 tons) with a driver and a fully loaded cooling system, the 999 is twice as heavy as a normal race car.

Hydrogen fuel cell technology is novel to the race car industry. Ford might have made a milestone with its Hydrogen 999 speed record. Only time will tell how much further this new technology will go.

The Lexus RX400h Hybrid SUV is said to be the Toyota Highlander’s ‘fraternal twin’. It has everything the Highlander is popular about. The only thing is that: it is MORE luxurious.

The ‘400’ in the RX400h means it performs like a 4-liter engine, with acceleration from 0 – 60 in just 7.3 seconds just like the Highlander.

And similar with the Highlander, the RX400h also comes with a Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management system (VDIM), which monitors vehicle and road conditions to help drivers avoid accident and improves smoothness of handling.

But what the Highlander does NOT have is the RX400h’s new and sleeker design. Not only does it have integrated fog lamps and wind-tunnel aerodynamics, but also sports 18-inch alloy wheels. It also offers standard DVD entertainment and navigation systems plus a Mark Levinson Premium Audio System. The RX400h also concentrates on reducing noise. Engine mounts have been moved forward to minimize vibration, the air intake system has been redesigned to reduce noise and insulation has been added to the body panels, wheel wells, and even inside the windshield all in an effort to make this the quietest ride possible.

With these features, we can expect the Lexus RX400h to start the trend in luxury SUV’s. It is making the Highlander dull as dishwater by comparison.
